Opals are the traditional birthstone for October. Opal was, and still is, considered a lucky charm in many countries. It supposedly brings beauty, fortune, and happiness and is an excellent talisman for vision. Since the 19th century there has been a french superstition of bad luck connected to opals. However this may have referrred to the bad luck of opal polishers due to the fragility of the stone, rather than bad luck for the wearer. Opals contain water and should not be exposed to dry heat, abrasions or hard knocks!
